There Is Always A First Time
"Better an OOPS than a WHAT IF?" -ANONYMOUS
Do you get scared? ... a little frightened to try? ... hold back and just keep on perfecting what you have ready?
If this is you, then you are NOT alone. Fear is the number one soul crusher of talent.
Think about a child learning to walk. They get an idea, not so much about the technique, but more so the desire to get to the object they wanted. Did they get scared that they may fall and hurt themselves? Did they only choose to walk if the route was safe? Clearly, they were impatient, excited, they just wanted the object they were fixated on. It did not matter that they bumped into furniture they had to sit down for a bit in the middle of the journey. They just went for it!
If I was to turn the tables to ask what is it that you are delaying in doing, maybe I could guess that it will be that the outcome (your object) may not be fully believed that you can actually have that. The fear of failure or being humiliated may be greater than the deserved outcomes. ...wouldn't it be nice to be like the kid who begins to walk again.
Did you realise that people do not buy perfect? They buy the vision, the excitement of belief, the want to help, the product that can help them solve their problem or issue, the way to feel better... I have even been to a salesman who was just so scared that he trembled in his voice, choking up on his delivery, sweating profusely - you get the picture. I felt so bad for him that I could not say no! He did not show me how I needed this in my life or how it would solve a problem, but it was something that I certainly did not need but I could find a use for. So, by saying yes, I was his confidence booster for his first time.
Think of your first times: > The first time you drove a car - you were not the greatest driver but you wanted in on the game to give you more freedom and status. > The first time you had sex - you knew you wanted it, but had no idea of the moves, but you trusted yourself to learn and be inspired. > The first time you had to speak up in front of a small crowd - you felt compelled to say what you knew, add another perspective, being supportive, scared, worried you might show you do not fully understand, but hoping there was someone else in that crowd that liked what you had to say. > The first time you went for a job interview - nervous and needing a bathroom almost all of the time prior, blushing, trying to catch your breath, but when they said: "I like you, I think you'll be a good fit", you eased. Your world was about to change. You owned that moment. You see, your goal of desire was more important than the technicalities of the 'how you delivered yourself' in these situations. YOU WERE BY NO MEANS PERFECT.
Trust yourself that the goal is already achieved. If the outcomes do not happen as you'd hoped for, consider it a lesson to improve on. You see, nobody really fails, they just take another path. It is okay to be the tourist at times in your life because that is where more opportunities lie and great stories come from. I put it to you to try something new, do something bold - yes out of your comfort zone and make a new first time. While you are pondering your first new move, I will also take a leaf out of my friend's Lynda 'Sunshine' West's mission of 'Year of Firsts' to take on the leap of faith too. Drop me a few lines as I'd love to hear about your new first-time adventure.
